The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

There are chocolate chip cookies... and then there are these chocolate chip cookies.

These are my famous chocolate chip cookies, and after years of baking, tweaking, and taste-testing, I can confidently say they are absolute perfection.

Ingredients

  • 14 tablespoons softened butter

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2½ cups flour plus 2 tablespoons

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1½ cups chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

  2. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

  3. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

  5. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  6. Fold in the chocolate chips.

  7. Cover and chill the dough for several hours, or preferably overnight.

  8. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 375°F.

  9. Form the dough into tall, narrow towers and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving room between each cookie.

  10. Bake for 9 minutes.

  11. Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.

These cookies are everything a chocolate chip cookie should be: crisp, golden edges, a perfectly caramelized bottom, a soft and gooey center, rich buttery flavor, and puddles of melted chocolate woven into every bite. They have that thick, bakery-style texture people spend years trying to recreate at home, yet the secret isn't complicated at all.

It's a combination of a few simple techniques.

First, chill the dough. This step is worth every minute of waiting. As the dough rests, the flour fully hydrates, the butter and sugars meld together, and the flavors deepen into something richer and more complex. The result is a thicker cookie with incredible texture and flavor.

Second, shape the dough into tall, skinny towers rather than traditional cookie dough balls. It sounds almost too simple, but this little trick is pure magic. As the cookies bake, they spread just enough while maintaining their height, creating that irresistible contrast between crisp edges, a perfectly golden bottom, and a soft, tender center.

And finally, patience.

Fresh from the oven, these cookies are undeniably delicious. Warm, melty, and impossible to resist. But if you can manage to leave a few behind, something remarkable happens over the next several hours. The flavors settle and deepen, the texture becomes even more luxurious, and the chocolate seems to weave itself into every buttery bite. By the next day, they are somehow both softer and more complex.

These are the cookies I bring to birthdays, holidays, potlucks, family gatherings, and ordinary Tuesday afternoons. They're the cookies friends request, neighbors remember, and children hover around the kitchen waiting for.

If you're looking for a chocolate chip cookie recipe that delivers every single time, this is it. Just don't be surprised when people ask for the recipe before they've even finished their first cookie.
